I am Pınar, 29 old illustrator from İzmir/Turkey. Actually, i did master degree in interior design. But i like drawing more and started to illustrate on my own hook. I have been married for 6 months. Another things i like the most are watching movies, making cooking videos(you can see on my instagram page), being interested my plants and creating handmade crafts/decors etc.

Why are you in business?

I want to work what i love and have talents. Also, illustrators can work from their home-office. This idea is attractive for my lifestyle habits. I want to make dreams come true and to reach other peoples. I think the way of business is “to contact with other peoples.”

Why are in this type of business?

I love and interested every branch of design. It is not just my area of interests. Design is my life in large part.

What is your background?

I have master’s degree in interior design. The subject of my thesis is “Effects of Artificial Lighting Design on Brand Identity, Case Study: Bisquitte Restaurant” Firstly, i launched some products which is on my illustrations. Also i have worked with brands; Two Spatul, Pikap Kadıköy, PaperStreet Co., de/da Mag and Match-Up Mag. I am doing workshops with kindergartners about “Illustration.” For two years running, i am doing workshops with seniors about “Brand Identity” in Yaşar University. Lastly, i have hold on exhibition, which is “Ex-It Maternity” in 2016.

Can you provide me with a description of your business?

Actually, i am a freelance illustrator that i am working with other brands. But the brand of my products is “PD Artworks.” For now, i am working by way of instagram or email. My illustrations are customer specific and unique. So i am drawing in the direction of customer requests with hand drawn. Also, magazines are sending their issue theme or coloumns, then i illustrates in this directions.

How long have you been in business? In this business? In other businesses?

I am in this business for 6 years.

What type of business form do you have, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation?

I am a solepreneur.

What are the advantages of this form of business ownership?

Actually, i like to be on my own boss. I think nobobody can’t do my job as much as me. But this means that i have different responsibilites and duties. While i was being busy, i received help from my family. The design contains freedom and free time. Business ownership allows this circumstances.

How did you get started in this business?

In my dissertation term, i have illustrated the book “Anılarla Öğretmenlik” in 2013. Then i designed cakes, cookies etc. with “Two Spatul” in same year. After all these works, i have decided to start my own business.

How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?

When i was a kid, my family always bought books with illustrations for me. Also, they love the most reading comic books. I think, it touched me positively. But i have never thought i’d be an illustrator or designer.

Some design classes and workshops have developed my technique and material selection. Also i am following and investigating illustrators that i loved.

How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?

This is so long answer for Turkey. Although illustrator was an old job in my country, people didn’t took it seriously. (I don’t know why.) This prejudice has pulled down to me since starting my job.

Another issue that i want to mention is “pricing.” It is really difficult to explain to people why is pricing like that! This is not a passtime and designers/illustrators have to defray vital needs.

In my country, there is lack of financial support for designers or artists. Sometimes, “design” or “make business” is so hard in the circumstances.

Do you know who your competitors are?

In this circumstances, i think there are no competitors. As far as i can see, designers are in solidarity with each other.

How do you market your business? How are people aware of your business?

They can reach me on instagram or email, for now.

Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?

I can’t tell from now. Because technology and social media will improve. But i will try the new channels and business spaces. For example, i will start to work with event company from İzmir. I will draw all illustrations of events, which is like wedding, birthday party, bar mitzvah etc.

How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?

Having an internet and social media acount, it helped me so much! I made all business calls on internet, since starting to work.

I always advise with my husband, mum and dad!

Do you have a business plan to operate your business?

For now, i have no huge plans.
